Home to school transport

Some children may be eligible to receive free transport to school and for children who live in Hertfordshire the Council provides information about their Home to School Transport Policy and the assistance they offer.

Children of statutory school age (aged 5 to 16) qualify for free transport to school if they attend their nearest suitable school and live:

at least 2 miles away if they are under 8 or

3 miles away if they are 8 or older

These distances are called Statutory Walking Distances.

The law states that even if your child lives within statutory walking distance of the school, they may be eligible for free transport. The Council has to consider whether the child is from a low-income family, has any special education needs and if the walk to school is safe.

Home to school transport policy

When you apply for a school, the Council will automatically consider whether you’re entitled to free school transport. You don’t need to apply separately. They will only contact you if you are entitled to free transport.

There are different policies for post 16 education and for those who have special educational needs or disabilities.
