Post 16 transport

There is no statutory entitlement to travel support for 16 – 18 year olds attending school or college.

However, the Council offer support to young people who meet the following criteria:

Young people with SEND aged 19 to 25 can also be supported in some circumstances and details of that are in the Council’s policy.

They are unable to travel independently
and

The school or college they attend is the nearest suitable setting named on the EHC Plan

Other opportunities

There are a number of other opportunities and options for young people across Hertfordshire:

Travel Training Travel

This helps young people with SEND become more comfortable with travelling independently. Trainers will help build the confidence of the young person by teaching them:

  • road and personal safety
  • how to use timetables and buy tickets
  • what to do when things go wrong (for example, if the train is late or cancelled)
  • how or where to ask for help

Hertfordshire County Council provides young people aged between 16-18 that have an EHCP with training specifically for home to college travel.

Public transport options

Having access to a range of travel and transport options can help support your independence.

You may also be entitled to subsidised travel which can help with the cost of getting around.
