Benefits and money matters

Having a child with a disability can require additional financial challenges and expenses. There are a range of financial support options available for families to consider. What’s more, there is additional funding available for settings, such as Disability Access Funding.

Benefits for families

GOV.UK provides a range of information on carers and disability benefits, including:

  • Universal credit
  • Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
  • Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
  • Carer’s Allowance

The website also provides information about a range of other beenfits.

Working out what benefits you can apply for

For information on income-related benefits, contribution-based benefits, Universal Credit, tax credits, Council Tax Reduction and Carer’s Allowance use one of the following benefit calculators:

These three calculators provide an independent, free and anonymous check to see what you could be entitled to.

Becoming an adult

When people turn 16 they usually become responsible for any benefits they claim. Some people cannot manage this so a family member or a carer becomes an Appointee.

The appointee can make claims, give information that’s required, and inform of any changes that might affect entitlement to benefits. The benefits are paid to the appointee on behalf of the young person.

Funding professionals can apply for

Parents can’t apply for this funding, but you may like to be aware of it so you can speak to your school or support provider about claiming on your behalf, if you feel you may be eligible.
